Does or can Tylenol PM cause panic attacks?

Posted by admin - Under: Cause of Panic Attacks

Hello all,

about a 4months ago I wanted to go to sleep one day because I was really hyper don’t why and had school the next day. I looked for some medicine and found some tylenol pm and took 3 pills of them. I guess it was the strongest because the pills were kinda big. Anyway about 20 min after I my chest were my heart is started to fill funny and I didn’t know what it was. Few seconds later I felt like out of air and needed to breath more I guess because it felt like I was dying sort of (really scary) and my heart when racing. This was all while lying down and I have never had any medical problems till I took this Tylenol PM. I went to the ER with my family and everything came out fine, they even did EKG’s which also came out fine except I kinda had poisounous amount of tylenol in blood and also while at the hospital I had another "attack" which was even scarier. I continued having these attacks although not as strong for the next month or two. I went to the doc and they did EKG’s again and everything was fine. Now I know that overdoes on tylenol PM can cause liver and kidney damge, but do you guys think it could trigger panic attacks. I have always had this doubt and searched everywhere for this answer and no luck. What do you guys think.

Next time, READ THE LABEL. I know this has probably been drilled into your head already because of your trip to the ER, but make sure that you learned your lesson well. Too many people think that over-the-counter drugs can’t harm you when in fact, they can kill you. Tylenol is the NUMBER ONE cause of liver failure in the US. I have an ER nurse friend who watched a teenage kid die a horrible, painful, bloody death from a Tylenol overdose. So be careful.

Could it trigger a panic attack? I imagine any life-threatening situation could, yes.

ya there was a near poisoning of your body beause of excessive use of tylenol , any way what is important is to realize the bad effects of the medicine that doing such would endanger your life and take adeep breath often and relax do not make your life difficult.

I’ve taken 5 Tylenol PM at a time before. Just to go to sleep. You see some people are more susceptible to medicines then others…Whenever I took that many I ended up sleeping like 30hours. Nevertheless, seeing as tylenol PM contains dyphenhydromine which is the drugs that puts you to sleep which is essentially the main ingredient in Benadryl used to stop allergic reactions. I do NOT suggest taking as many as I did by no means. You can die from that. It can cause a frantic panicky state. I’ve experienced these myself after taking more than the recommended dosage. Now if I take any I take one(1) pill. It’s just not good for your body. Make sure you eat something before you take those too. The benadryl actually slows your heart rate and makes it a little more difficult to breath.

It is very unlikely that this medication has caused you to have a panic attack. It is actually very common for psychiatric hospitals to use Benadryl as an anti-anxiety medication because of it’s safety. Taking 3 Tylenol PMs however could make you feel a little strange though, especially if you are not used to the medication, which could trigger a fear response. 1500mg of Tylenol will not cause you to overdose- you can take up to 4000mg a day. 75mg of Diphenhydramine hydrochloride might make you feel really really freakin weird, but it’s not going to kill you. I think you can take nearly 400mg of it per day. Anyhow, I am sure the panic was caused by your bodies fear response to being over-intoxicated. You may have been scared from it.
